Fish for breakfast strikes some people as strange, which says more about imported breakfast habits than about the food. In coastal and riverine Nigeria it is ordinary, and it makes far more sense than sugar and white bread: protein first thing keeps hunger away for hours in a way refined carbohydrate simply does not.
Smoked fish suits the morning particularly well because the work is already done. It needs no defrosting, no long cooking, no marinade — warm it through with pepper and onion and it is ready in the time it takes the kettle to boil.
It is usually eaten with pap, yam, bread, or nothing at all.
What is in it
- Smoked fish
- Fresh pepper
- Onion
- Palm or vegetable oil
- Salt and seasoning
How it sits with your body
A protein-led breakfast rather than a starch-led one, which is the more useful way round: protein keeps you full for longer and does not spike and drop the way sweet bread does.
Oily smoked fish brings omega-3 fats along with the protein, and the small bones add calcium if you eat them.
Worth knowing
Salt again — preserved fish carries a lot of it. If it is very salty, a rinse or a short soak before cooking takes the edge off without costing the flavour.
